Mass Hysteria

This is a place for me to post my rage at socio-politico-economico idiocracy. That and keep in touch with my friends. And also I don't wanna be the last of my friends with a blog.

Nose Candy

With all the fuss about Barry approaching The Babe's home run record (which would make him the #1-all-time left-handed HR hitter), I can't help but remember a highly-touted lefty who started his career a few years before Bonds.

What would have happened if this guy could have kept his nose clean (literally). Would it have helped if he was somewhere other than NY? I used to have his Fleer rookie card (1984); even in 4/10 condition it was worth $30 back in 1988 or so.

Nothing?

We need to recapture the moral high ground.
-Fay Vincent
Nothing is more important to me than the integrity of the game of baseball.
-Bud Selig

These gems and more.

My ass.

Gee, Sammy and Mark* sure do look strong this year! -Selig, '98
Wow, Barry's golden** years really are looking golden! -Selig, '01

Gonna take some cuts after work

Last Wednesday Rob left a message for me on my answering machine inviting me to meet him at the batting cage to take some cuts. Rob's excitment about this upcoming MSBL season was apparent; he kept talking about his mile-runs several times per week, and about his new duties coaching track at the high school where he had just started teaching. Even though he turned 30 during the off-season, his pitching form was as good as I've seen it in the 3 years that we've played together. This would be a rare occasion for him to be in Albuquerque during the week, but alas I had other stuff to do and couldn't meet him. I had to get some things around the house done before my LA trip.

Rob's enthusiasm and hope is hard to deny. For the duration of my relationship with him, he has been in college finishing his teaching degree while working odd jobs (including the Victoria's Secret call-center) to try to get by. Since we've been practicing for this season (about 3 weeks now) he's been obviously stoked that he and Trish have really turned a corner in their marriage, and they're really doing well. Financially they're doing better than they ever have, and they even have more time for 4 year old Jonah now.

Yesterday I got a call from Brandon giving me details of Rob's memorial service which will be tonight at 6:30 pm in Belen.

James 4:13-15 (New King James Version):
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

Hawaiian Airlines: Dual purpose?

So, yeah, Hawaii is the seat of the Pacific Fleet, for good reason being nearly in the center of the Pacific and all...

It just makes me smile to think that I've been flying 737s all my life interisland (and now interstate). It makes me giddy to think that those same 737s can do this now. Ok, so they're slightly modified to do this, but still, it's cool!

Invading Fleet's Admiral: There goes another one of those interisland flights.
Ensign on the Deck: Uh, sir, that airliner's flying awfully low for an interisland flight, don't you think? And, um, it's a little off course, considering we're still 900 miles northwest of Kauai?
IF'sA: Did something just fall from that airliner?
EotD: TORPEDO!!!!
